WATERTOWN — The Thompson Park Golf Course got some unwanted attention last week from an NBC golf website about the April 8 total solar eclipse.
The city-owned golf course was mentioned in an article about 15 notable golf courses and resorts to visit during the celestial event.
But general manager Jordan Northrop made it clear that the Thompson Park Golf Course will be closed on the day of the eclipse.
The historic course won’t be opening for the season until the eclipse is over. The city-owned park is scheduled to start the season on April 15.
And he doesn’t want anyone on the course on the day of the eclipse. He wants to make sure the course is ready to play on that first day of the season.
“I’m worried about damage to our greens,” he said.
Associated with NBC Sports, the website offers savings on tee times for its members, live coverage of the sport and features on professional golfers, courses and equipment.
The story about the eclipse mentions 15 “notable” courses that will come under temporary darkness during the rare celestial event. According to the article, the eclipse will be in the direct path of dozens of courses and leave lasting memories for golfers.
But Northrop repeated that Thompson Park Golf Course will be closed so they’ll have to go some place else.
He also doesn’t put much credence in the story, stressing that its author misidentifies the name of the course in Thompson Park.
It’s called Watertown Golf Club in the article. That was the name of the course before the city purchased nine of its 18 holes in 2022 and then renamed it.
While the golf course will not be open, the city of Watertown is hosting the Total Eclipse of the Park event in the park that day.
The city believes tens of thousands of people — some from across the country and around the world — will be there to view the eclipse.
The event will feature a day of music, food trucks, children’s activities and a opportunity to visit Zoo New York.
